Omaha Metro consumers spend $2.6 billion annually, buying food that is produced outside of the region. If each consumer purchased (or had purchased for them) $5 of food each week directly from a farm in the region, $211 million of new farm income would be generated for Omaha Metro farmers, providing vital economic support for agriculture and increasing food security.
The Local Farm & Food Economy regional report for Omaha Metro covers Douglas, Sarpy, and Washington counties and compiles data from a variety of sources, including the U.S. Department of Agriculture Census of Agriculture and the Bureau for Economic Analysis.
This report provides a snapshot of the agricultural economy of the Omaha Metro region and can provide a starting point for conversations about strengthening local food systems.
This regional report was written by Ken Meter of Crossroads Resource Center and published for the Center for Rural Affairs and Heartland Regional Food Business Center.
